The federal government has a very strict policy that requires any modular building or mobile office to be ADA accessible. “ADA accessible” as outlined by the Americans with Disabilities Act means that your mobile office or modular building will be easily accessible with a ramp or level ground access, specifically for individuals using a mobility device.
Most traditional mobile offices and modular buildings have a chassis and frame that make the building set about 36” above the ground. When your modular building is installed, the chassis remains part of the structure. ADA code requires that you have a ramped access to the main egress of your modular building. The ratio for the code is for every inch high your mobile office sets above existing grade, you have to have 12” of ramp. For example:
| If you set your mobile office at 30” high you would have a 30’ ramp with a landing, handrails designed per code and upright supports. The professionals at Modular Solutions, Ltd can assist you with the proper design for your modular building ramp. |
Another way to achieve ADA accessibility of your new modular building is to excavate or bring down the existing grade. By bringing down the grade (building a pit), you are able to bring your modular building main egress door equal with the current existing grade. The operations team at Modular Solutions, Ltd will be glad to review your site requirements and offer helpful suggestions for your site.
Modular Solutions, Ltd also makes a more permanent structure that is built in the factory and then sets on a traditional concrete slab. By setting your modular building on the slab at the correct engineered grade level, we are able to provide full ADA access. Site conditions affect the final designs of this product line and site engineering is typically required.
Compliance with ADA is required on any mobile office or modular building site, and the experienced team at Modular Solutions, Ltd will be glad to help you through the details of egress and ADA compliance.
